Google Nexus 4 has hidden 4G LTE radio, but who’ll activate it?
If you think that you know everything about Google’s Nexus 4, then sorry, you don’t. Yes, the new Android flagship phone has something in stock to surprise you. While Gooogle was promoting it’s recently announced Nexus in various markets, many cried why 4G has been ditched in this low cost premium device.
The recent Nexus 4 tear down suggests that Lg made Nexus has a hidden gem inside it in the form of inactive 4G LTE radio. However, during the launch, answering to why they left 4G, google cried that it was too difficult to work with carriers for LTE support and opted for simplicity when it decided to fly solo for its unlocked, contract-free option.
But now, it seems like Google has its own plan, to let the carriers decide to adopt the Nexus 4 at a later date as is–without the pesky cellular contracts–in the form of a hidden 4G LTE radio inside.
The teardown done by ifixit clearly suggests that there is a multi-band LTE radio made by Qualcomm hidden inside the smartphone that is deactivated by default. The LTE radio supports up to seven bands, making it suitable for a potential global rollout to GSM networks around the world.
But what if Google decides not to activate 4G LTE? No need to worry, hackers are there who can easily (or anyhow) unlock this hidden potential.
