Samsung bringing Galaxy S4’s S Health package and newer TouchWiz features to S3

Sure the Samsung Galaxy S4 boasts top-of-the-line hardware and improves greatly upon its predecessor, but that doesn’t mean the Galaxy S3 will stay outdated, at least in terms of software. Released last year, the S3 still boasts specs that that can pass off for a flagship, except perhaps the 720p display, which is now being made to look mid-range by the 1080p trend.

Samsung knows users of the Galaxy S3 will want to extend the lives of their handsets, so the company will be releasing all of the software enhancements of TouchWiz for the 2012 flagship as well.

According to Nick DiCarlo, Vice President–portfolio planning, Samsung, many of the TouchWiz software features that we first saw in the Galaxy S4 will be rolled out to the Galaxy S3 and possibly the Galaxy Note 2, as well. "Anything that we can do that's not dependent on hardware like infrared, we'll definitely bring to all the flagship devices," DiCarlo told PCMag.

The software refresh will bring several of the new features for the S3 and it could also bump up the Android OS version from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. As the Galaxy S3 already has a powerful front-facing camera that is harnessed for the Smart Stay and Smart Rotate functions, the new additions of Smart Scroll and Smart Pause won’t be too hard to roll out to the S3. In addition, we could also see all the S Health-related goodies as well as the S Voice Drive feature in the S3. It will also get the S Translator feature that can instantly translate chunks of foreign text in emails, text messages to your desired language.

Besides these new TouchWiz elements, the S4 comes with a bigger and higher-resolution display. Inside, depending on where you are, there’s a Exynos 5 Octa or the Snapdragon 600 CPU with plenty of firepower. There are powerful GPU combinations for both CPU and 2GB of RAM.

Here are the key specs of the Samsung Galaxy S4:
  • 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED (1920 x 1080) display, 441 ppi
  • HSPA+, LTE, GPRS/EDGE
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth 4.0 with EDR and A2DP
  • GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS
  • NFC
  • MicroUSB 2.0 with MHL, USB On-the-go, USB Host
  • 13 megapixel primary camera with LED flash, Simultaneous HD video and still image stabilisation, 1080p video recording.
  • 2 megapixel front-facing camera, 1080p video recording @ 30fps
  • 16/32/64GB internal storage with microSD card for further expansion up to 64 GB

Samsung has managed a great feat of engineering with the Galaxy S4, cramming in a bigger screen and updated internals in a package smaller and lighter than 2012’s Galaxy S3. The company has also upgraded the battery inside its flagship and now users get a 2600 mAh Lithium-ion battery in keeping with the higher-res display.
