Apple says App store has served 40 Billion apps downloads, 20 billion in 2012

Apple today announced that the App Store has served more than 40 billion app downloads since it was introduced in 2008.

That's an already impressive figure, but what's more surprising is that customers downloaded half of those apps in 2012.

Apple revealed today that the App Store has more than 500 million active accounts, and those users have access to more than 775,000 apps

The plethora of choices and rise in iPhone and iPad users led to more than 20 billion downloads last year. There were more than 2 billion downloads in December.

The 40 billion downloads figure represents a unique number of transactions and excludes re-downloads or updates of the same app on the same device. Eddy Cue, Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services, released the following statement about Apple's banner year for downloads:

"It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."
